Baking Soda is commonly known for its use in cooking and baking. For years, people have also been using it for health and hygiene purposes. More recently it has gained popularity as a simple cleaning ingredient for use around the home. Here are 6 ways you can use this magic powder around your home.

1. Cleaning your clothes

When used moderately, baking soda can be used to clean clothes as a laundry booster. It works well on tough stains caused by food, grass or liquid. One of the biggest nightmares on clothing is sweat stains as these tend to be extremely stubborn. Hot weather makes it especially hard to avoid these. If you regularly check the Big W offers, you will notice that this week they have gym attire. For the gym enthusiasts, you know that sweat will sometimes ruin your clothes and leave your sneakers smelling awful. Baking soda will do the magic for you too; just sprinkle a little in the sneakers and let it stand, dust it out before you wear them.

2. Removing scuffs off walls

If you have children around the home, it’s inevitable you are going to come across all sorts of marks on the walls. Scuff marks are never pleasant to look at. To remove these, simply mix 1 part baking soda with 1 part of water to create a paste, then take a cloth and dab it in the mixture. Next step is to gently rub away the scuff marks with the paste and you will see them magically disappear leaving your walls nice and clean.

3. Unclogging sinks

We all know how clogged up sinks can cause a terrible stink around the home. There is no need to call a plumber if you have baking soda and vinegar in your cupboard. Simply mix these two together by adding a cup of baking soda down your drain. Let it sit for an hour before adding 2 cups of vinegar down the drain. Finally, run hot water down the drain and your sink drain will smell lovely and fresh once more.

4. Refresh your stainless steel

Liquids like tea and other dark beverages over time will result in stains building up on your stainless-steel household items. Cutlery and other appliances like kettles or even the kitchen sink are no exception. To keep these clean and looking as good as new, use baking soda by mixing it with enough water to create a paste. This forms a gentle abrasive that you can use to clean your stainless-steel appliance with much ease.

5. Cleaning your microwave

Sometimes when using a microwave to cook or heat up meals, food can splutter inside it. To clean spots of food that have dried up in your microwave, fill up a microwave- safe bowl with cold water and add two tablespoons of baking soda. The next step is to stir the solution, place it in your microwave and turn it on for 5 minutes. The steam and the baking soda help to dissolve the stubborn food stuck inside. After the 5 minutes is up, all you have to do is wipe with a clean wet cloth and your microwave is as good as new.

6. Deodorise your carpets

Want to get rid of stuffy smells coming from your carpet? Over time, dust and dead skin cells will accumulate leaving your rugs or carpets smelling unpleasant. To alleviate the smell, baking soda can do the trick. Sometimes rather than hire a carpet cleaning service all you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda over your carpet. Leave it to sit for 30 minutes and then vacuum it all up and the smell will be gone.

Baking soda has so many uses that are beneficial to your household. Keeping it in your home could save you money from buying expensive cleaning products for jobs that this simple but effective powder can do.
